In the older part of Breaux Bridge, near Bayou Teche, a driveway may be as old as the house. Maybe it has cracked across the middle and sunk where it meets the street. On the heavy clay here, water may also stand in a flat backyard for days after a hard rain.
RockSolid Contracting is a concrete contractor based in Lafayette. We come over on I-10, about 15 minutes east to Exit 109 at Rees Street. Here we pour new concrete driveways and slabs, take down old sheds and fix wet yards with yard drainage. Call or text (337) 520-8615, and send photos of the job if you like.
Tell us about the driveway, slab, drainage problem or teardown and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Breaux Bridge, in St. Martin Parish, grew up on both banks of Bayou Teche. The city's historic building list includes houses from the 1860s to the early 1900s. The lift bridge downtown dates to 1950, a steel span on concrete approaches.
About 1 in 5 homes in town was built before 1960, by Census estimates. About 4 in 10 more went up from 1960 to 1989. For the blocks nearest downtown, the estimates put the typical home between the late 1950s and the mid 1970s. When a house still has its first driveway or carport slab, that concrete is just as old.
A walk may have heaved by the steps, or a carport slab may have split. Where only part has failed, we saw-cut and tear out the broken section. The new concrete goes back on a compacted base. If an old carport or shed has to come down first, we take it down and haul the debris off.
Newer houses sit farther out from the old core. By Census estimates, most blocks west of downtown, toward Lafayette, have a typical home from the 1990s or later. North of I-10, the Atchafalaya Trace subdivision lies off the Rees Street extension.
New lots keep coming. In February 2026, the city council approved the final lot map for a fourth phase of Atchafalaya Trace. In 2025, it signed off on a new phase of Parc Ridge. The Census counted 63 new single-family homes permitted in the city in 2022.
Once the house is done, the yard may still need a back patio and a front walk. Some owners also want a slab for a shop or shed out back. We pour them with a broom finish and control joints, sloped so rain runs away from the house.
The NRCS, the federal soil survey agency, maps clay soils across much of the ground around the town center. Tensas silty clay loam, Iberia silty clay and Sharkey clay cover more than half of it. The NRCS rates all three very high for shrink-swell. The clay swells when it is wet and shrinks as it dries.
The agency notes that shrinking and swelling can damage buildings and roads. For houses without basements, it rates these soils very limited because of the swelling and the wetness. The Dundee silt loam here holds a high water table part of the year. Where the land is not drained, the NRCS puts it 1.5 to 3.5 feet down in winter and spring.
So the work starts below the concrete. We pour on a compacted base, with the rebar or wire mesh set before the ready-mix truck arrives. Control joints go in so the shrinkage cracks land where they belong. When water rises from below after long rains, a French drain along the low side can carry it off.
Bayou Teche runs through town, and the Vermilion River lies about 4 miles west. FEMA's flood map puts less than a tenth of the city's land in its high-risk zones. In the August 2016 flood, more than 1,000 homeowners with a Breaux Bridge mailing address applied for FEMA help. FEMA approved housing aid for 374 of them.
The city runs drainage projects of its own. Council minutes record two outfall projects finished in 2023 and 2026. An outfall is the spot where a drain line empties. The second one was at Armentine Cove.
On a private lot, the water needs a path to the street or a ditch. City code makes it unlawful to block or divert the natural flow of water. In town, the owner gets a city permit before a culvert or catch basin goes in. We set catch basins and drain lines, or regrade a low spot, so the yard drains toward the street.
