Concrete removal and replacement is how a cracked or sunken slab becomes a new one. We tear out old driveways, patios, walks, steps, slabs and foundations at homes around Lafayette and across Acadiana. When only part of a slab has failed, we saw-cut the section so the sound concrete stays.
The old concrete breaks up under a hydraulic breaker on the excavator and leaves on the dump trailer. Then the base is graded and compacted for a new concrete driveway or a patio and a walkway. Call or text (337) 520-8615, and send photos if you like. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Tell us about the driveway, slab, drainage problem or teardown and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Buried lines get marked first. State law requires notice to Louisiana 811 at least 48 hours before any excavation or demolition. Weekends and holidays do not count toward those hours, and the law counts grading and backfilling as excavation too.
Then we saw-cut the section. A straight cut along a joint or a clean line leaves a square edge on the concrete that stays. The breaker on the excavator breaks the slab into pieces, and the bucket loads them onto the dump trailer.
Concrete demolition works the same way on steps and old foundations. When the last load leaves, the ground is graded for the new base.
Concrete shrinks as it dries, and a National Ready Mixed Concrete Association guide explains how that shrinkage cracks a slab. Those cracks typically show up within days to several weeks of the pour. Control joints give them a planned place to form. A thin crack with both sides still flush is usually shrinkage, and that slab can stay.
Replacement makes sense when the concrete shows the ground under it moved. Watch for a crack with one side higher than the other, or a panel sunk at the street. Water standing on the slab and pieces breaking loose point the same way. A patch fills the crack, but the soft or washed-out ground under the slab stays as it was.
Our side of concrete repair is replacement. We saw-cut out the bad section or the whole slab, then pour new concrete on a sound base. Crack patching and concrete leveling are other trades, and we will say so when a slab only needs that.
Much of the ground around Lafayette is silt loam that drains slowly, according to USDA soil surveys. The poorly drained ones are wet within 18 inches of the surface from December to April in most years. A base that stays wet or washes out lets a driveway sink and crack.
So a replacement driveway goes back on a graded, compacted base, with rebar or wire mesh in the slab. The new slab gets control joints and a broom finish. When water caused the failure, yard drainage or a French drain can go in before the pour. Pour days follow the weather.
Where a driveway crosses a roadside ditch, a new culvert pipe can go in while the old drive is out. The Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) requires written approval from Public Works before any culvert goes in the ditch. Other towns and parishes set their own rules, and those questions are settled before work starts.

First comes the tear-out, or the forms and rebar for new concrete. Then the ready-mix truck arrives, and we pour and finish the slab. On drainage jobs, we dig the trench and set the pipe.
We take a final look at the work with you, and the site is cleaned up. We also tell you when the new concrete can take foot traffic and when it can take a car.
